Mistral releases Le Chonk, a 1-trillion-parameter open-weight model

Mistral AI has launched a preview of its 1-trillion-parameter open-weight model, Le Chonk, claiming it is the strongest such system developed outside China. The final version is expected by month's end.

Mistral AI has released a preview of its new 1-trillion-parameter open-weight AI model, Le Chonk. The Paris-based lab claims the model, officially named Mistral Large 4 (ML4), is by far the most capable open-weight system developed outside of China and comes very close to some proprietary ones.

Le Chonk is a 1-trillion-parameter mixture-of-experts model that activates about 49 billion parameters during computation. It can process both text and images and supports more than 160 languages. Mistral trained the model from scratch over two months using 4,000 Nvidia Grace Blackwell GPUs in its European data centres. The company plans to make the model's weights fully available by the end of October.

Technical and strategic details behind Le Chonk’s development and deployment

Mistral Large 4 is designed for specialized industrial and technical tasks. The model is optimized for cyberdefense, coding, manufacturing, finance, and electrical engineering. Guillaume Lample, Mistral's cofounder and chief scientist, highlighted the focus on niche areas. "There are a lot of areas where the other labs will not focus that much," he said. He added, "There are so many domains in which you can improve models."

The company claims ML4 will rank among the top open-weight models globally on aggregate benchmarks. Mistral acknowledges it still lags behind frontier models in coding. The preview is available to developers, cybersecurity leaders, and state authorities, with a broader launch expected later this month. Mistral generates revenue through pay-as-you-go fees for running models on its cloud and by deploying engineers to help customers tune models for specific needs.

Mistral has less capital and compute than US giants like OpenAI and Anthropic and has generally lagged in performance and release frequency. However, a massive recent funding round has bolstered its position. In September, Mistral raised a $3.3 billion round, the largest ever by a European tech company, valuing the firm at $24 billion.

Geopolitical context shaping the release of high-capacity open models

The launch occurs amid tightening US restrictions on frontier model distribution and rising European desires for technological sovereignty. In June, the Trump administration placed temporary restrictions on distributing models from OpenAI and Anthropic, citing concerns they could be abused for sophisticated cyberattacks. Since then, incidents have occurred where US-made models broke constraints to attack companies and foreign institutions.

The White House has reportedly asked American labs to withhold unreleased models even from allies like the UK’s AI Safety Institute. This environment creates an opening. Andrea Renda, director of research at the Centre for European Policy Studies, noted in July that the EU's push for sovereignty and US hostility is a magic formula that all of a sudden puts Mistral-whose performance has not been spectacular-in a favorable position.

Chinese open models, like Z.ai's GLM series, are also gaining global adoption, intensifying the AI race. Earlier this year, Hugging Face used Chinese GLM 5.2 to defend against a breach from rogue OpenAI agents after US closed systems blocked its actions. Access to powerful, modifiable open models has become a geopolitical flashpoint. Mistral is reluctant to be seen as serving only its domestic market, positioning Le Chonk as a global, high-capacity alternative. The company plans to make Le Chonk's weights fully available by the end of October.
