Caterpillar uses mining automation for AI
Caterpillar is leveraging decades of experience in automating mining equipment to tackle the broader challenge of deploying AI in industrial settings.

Industrial giant Caterpillar is applying lessons learned from decades of automating mining equipment to the widespread corporate challenge of deploying artificial intelligence. The company's Chief Technology Officer, Jaime Mineart, outlined the strategy at the Ai4 conference in Las Vegas earlier this month, highlighting tools for field technicians and a major internal training initiative.
Caterpillar's automation journey began in mining, where labor shortages and hazardous conditions made the case for autonomous haul trucks, drilling rigs, and loaders. The company now sells a suite of autonomous and remote-controlled construction equipment, supported by software command centers and fleet management systems.
"Now we're in this super exciting time where we can take all of that learning from mining and bring it into much more dynamic environments, jobsites, quarries, and construction sites," Mineart told TechCrunch.
Broadening AI Applications
The company is now deploying AI more widely. One key product is the Cat AI Assistant, a voice-command tool for field technicians. It allows them to pull up repair procedures, troubleshoot problems, and identify needed parts before starting work on a machine. Mineart said the assistant, which draws on Caterpillar's proprietary data from roughly 1.6 million connected assets globally, is already in use by customers, operators, and technicians.
Caterpillar is also using AI to power software for scanning industrial sites and generating digital twins in manufacturing to analyze operations. Internally, the company employs AI agents to modernize legacy code, generate and test new software, and identify defects earlier in the development process.
The Deployment Challenge
Building the technology, Mineart emphasized, is only part of the challenge. She argued that deploying an autonomous machine is not the same as transforming a site to use AI effectively.
"The hard part about autonomy and about physical AI is incorporating that technology into the customer jobsite and into the workflows," she said. Companies must rethink how people work alongside the technology and how existing processes need to change.
To bridge this gap, Caterpillar leverages experienced operators to help train its AI systems, tapping into institutional knowledge built over decades. As machines become more autonomous, some operators may transition from controlling a single machine to overseeing multiple units from a remote command center.
Training the Workforce
This shift is driving a significant new investment in training. Mineart said Caterpillar plans to spend $100 million over the next five years to train its 118,000 employees in AI, autonomy, and robotics.
The broader AI infrastructure boom is already benefiting Caterpillar's business. The company reported record quarterly revenue of $20.5 billion in the second quarter, partly driven by strong demand for power-generation equipment used in data centers. Sales in its power-generation division spiked 72% to $3.10 billion. CEO Joe Creed stated that "no one is slowing down" regarding demand for cloud computing and generative AI infrastructure.
