Headline Launches $400 Million EU VIII AI Fund for Europe
Headline has closed its eighth early-stage European fund, EU VIII, with $400 million to back Seed and Series A AI startups across the continent, continuing

Headline has announced EU VIII, a $400 million fund dedicated to Seed and Series A AI startups across Europe. This is the eighth early-stage fund the venture capital firm has established for European entrepreneurs, reinforcing its focus on artificial intelligence at the inception stage.
Fund builds on Headline’s long-term AI and European founder support
EU VIII continues a two-decade history of backing European AI. Headline, which manages more than $5 billion from offices in nine cities globally, first partnered with Mistral weeks after its founding in 2023. The firm invested in Mistral's €105 million seed round and has participated in every subsequent funding round, including the recent €3 billion Series D.
Headline helped Mistral raise its €385 million Series A, which was Europe's largest ever. Mistral is now valued at more than €21 billion. Arthur Mensch, Mistral's CEO, acknowledges the firm's deep involvement. "Headline has been much more than a Seed investor in Mistral," he said.
Separately, Headline operates a $900 million Global Growth Fund for later-stage investments from Series B onward. Christian Miele, a Partner at Headline, is bullish on the region's potential. "The next generation of great AI companies is being founded in Europe right now, and we want to be their first call," he stated.
Headline’s role in scaling European AI to the US
Beyond capital, Headline actively helps its European portfolio companies expand into the United States. This support includes setting up legal entities, making key senior hires, introducing customers, and preparing for cross-border listings. Its track record includes assisting companies like Farfetch, NGINX, and Semrush with their US market entries.
The firm's portfolio spans both foundational AI labs and application-layer software companies. Key foundation investments include Black Forest Labs, Bioptimus, Fundamental Technologies, AMI Labs, and Recursive Superintelligence. On the application side, it has backed firms such as Attio, DeepIP, Payflows, Primo, Searchable, Notch, and Procure AI.
EU VIII launches amid shifting AI funding dynamics
The launch of the $400 million fund occurs as European AI funding scales dramatically. Recent massive seed rounds for AI labs have raised questions about the competitive scale of traditional venture funds.
| Company | Round Size | Month 2026 | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| AMI Labs | $1.03 billion | March | Portfolio company, $3.5B pre-money valuation |
| Ineffable Intelligence | $1.1 billion | April | Founded by ex-DeepMind researcher David Silver |
| Recursive Superintelligence | $500 million | Not specified | Portfolio company |
All these individual rounds surpass the total capital of EU VIII. This dynamic presents a key challenge: whether a $400 million fund can remain a founder's preferred choice when single seed rounds now exceed $1 billion. The fund will be deployed to back Seed and Series A AI startups across Europe, continuing Headline's strategy of early partnership and hands-on support.
