OpenAI has clarified that a public offer to acquire a teenage entrepreneur's startup concept was a lighthearted remark rather than a serious business proposal. The statement follows an incident during a tech accelerator event in Dublin, where OpenAI’s Ireland policy lead, Derek Nolan, jokingly suggested buying the startup idea of 16-year-old Conall O'Reilly.

## The Incident at the Dublin Event

During the Patch summer programme, a scheme designed to support young entrepreneurs aged 16-21, Nolan made a playful remark about acquiring O'Reilly’s project. Video footage from the event shows Nolan announcing, “We are delighted to offer to acquire your company today, and your plan to create a free open decentralised internet. OpenAI would like to buy your project and take you in-house pretty soon.”

## OpenAI’s Response

OpenAI quickly clarified that the statement was not a genuine offer. A spokesperson for the company told the Irish Independent that Nolan was simply engaging in lighthearted banter with the audience. “One of the things he said was, we’re going to buy your company, you know, it was such a good project,” the spokesperson said. When pressed about the possibility of an acquisition, they confirmed, “But no. There isn’t any.”

The Patch summer programme, which is backed by industry sponsors including OpenAI, aims to help young innovators develop their startup ideas. OpenAI’s involvement in the programme underscores its commitment to fostering innovation among the next generation of entrepreneurs.
