TechCrunch Disrupt 2026 will introduce a special area for Real World AI. The event is scheduled for October 13 to 15 at San Francisco's Moscone West.

This new section will explore how digital AI merges with the physical world. Topics include autonomous hardware in public spaces, defense, homes, and even de-extinction efforts. The existing AI Stage from past years will run as a separate track.

Speakers for the Real World AI section come from Shield AI, Colossal Biosciences, FieldAI, Foxglove, and other companies. TechCrunch has announced the initial session lineup.

The Data Gap for General-Purpose Robots

One key session will look at the barriers to a 'ChatGPT moment' for robotics. Experts point out that robots lack the massive, readily available data that powered large language models and self-driving cars. This data shortage is the main hurdle. General-purpose robotic intelligence remains far off.

A fresh wave of startups is creating data pipelines, simulation environments, and foundation models to solve this. The session features Nvidia's Head of Physical AI Les Karpas. It will ask what is truly needed for a breakthrough in physical AI.

Deploying AI Where Failure Is Catastrophic

Another session deals with high-stakes AI deployment. In the physical world, a mistake can cause a crash, ground an aircraft, or doom a mission. Leaders from autonomous vehicle, defense, and industrial system firms will talk about safety. How do you know when an AI system is ready for real-world use?

The discussion will cover safety culture, testing, validation, regulations, and trust. Shield AI's CTO, Nate Michael, will take part.

AI in De-Extinction and Edge Computing

Colossal Biosciences CEO Ben Lamm will talk about using AI to bring back extinct species. His fireside chat will cover the technologies involved. It will also address the debate: does engineering nature help conservation or distract from it?

A separate session focuses on 'edge' AI deployment, where cloud access is limited. Leaders from defense, space, and industrial AI will explain their work. They make AI function where latency is critical and failure is unacceptable. Participants include Dr. Ali Agha of FieldAI and Michelle Lee of Medra.

Scaling AI Hardware from Prototype to Profit

The final announced session tackles a tough journey. It's about moving from a working prototype to a scaled, profitable business. Founders from space hardware, humanoid robotics, and autonomous systems will share lessons. They will discuss supply chains and manufacturing realities.

Speakers include John Mackey of MBRYONICS, Boris Sofman of Bedrock Robotics, and Adrian Macneil of Foxglove. They will talk about common pitfalls when shifting from lab conditions to production.

TechCrunch Disrupt 2026 will have four other sections alongside the Real World AI area. These include the main Disrupt Stage, the AI Stage, the Smart Money Stage, the Smart Systems Stage, and the Builders Stage. Over 10,000 attendees from startups, tech, and venture capital are expected.
